Our Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re considering therapy for your child or young person, it’s natural to have questions about how the process works. Here are some of the things parents and carers most often ask before getting started.
How are therapy sessions paid?
Therapy sessions are paid one month in advance. Payment can be made by online banking or cash. If you need to discuss an alternative payment arrangement, please speak to me.
What happens if I need to cancel or change an appointment?
Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or change an appointment.
If less than 48 hours’ notice is given, the full session fee remains payable.
Is the initial consultation free?
Yes. I offer a free initial telephone consultation so that you can briefly talk through what has been happening, ask questions and find out more about how I work.
There is no obligation to continue.
What ages do you work with?
I work with children and young people aged 3–18. I also provide support for parents and carers through Reflective Parenting Sessions, and can work with families where appropriate.
Where do sessions take place?
Therapy takes place in person at my practice in Redbridge, Ilford, East London.
Where appropriate, I may also be able to offer home visits or work externally with schools and other professionals.
Is therapy right for my child?
It can be difficult to know whether therapy is the right step for your child.
If your child is struggling with their emotions, behaviour, relationships, friendships, school or changes in their life, therapy may provide a space to understand what they are experiencing and explore ways of managing it.
The free initial telephone consultation is an opportunity to talk through what is happening and consider whether my approach may be suitable for your child.
What happens in a therapy session?
Sessions are adapted around the individual child.
Depending on their age, personality and needs, therapy may involve talking, drawing, art, making, play, sandtray or other creative approaches.
There is no expectation that every child will engage with therapy in the same way. Some children may want to talk, while others may communicate more naturally through creative or play-based activities.
Does my child have to talk about their feelings?
No.
Children communicate in different ways, and talking is only one part of the therapeutic process.
I may use art, drawing, making, play, sandtray and other creative approaches to help a child communicate and explore what they are experiencing.
The work is adapted around the individual child and there is no pressure to talk about something they are not ready to discuss.
How often will my child have therapy?
Therapy sessions are normally weekly and take place on the same day and at the same time each week.
Regular sessions help create consistency and familiarity, while giving your child an ongoing therapeutic space.
How long is a session?
Sessions are normally 50 minutes. This includes child and adolescent therapy and Reflective Parenting Sessions, unless discussed otherwise.
How involved are parents and carers?
Parents and carers remain an important part of the therapeutic process.
Where appropriate, I can help parents make sense of what may be happening for their child and think about ways they can support them outside of sessions.
The level of parental involvement will depend on the child, their age, their needs and what is most helpful for the therapeutic work.
What happens to what my child tells you?
What your child shares in therapy is treated as confidential. This helps create a safe space where they can talk openly.
I will usually discuss with your child what can be shared with you and involve them in decisions about sharing information wherever appropriate. There may be times when I need to share information without their agreement, for example if I am concerned that they or someone else may be at risk of harm. If this happens, I would normally talk this through with your child and you wherever possible.
Information may also need to be shared where there is a legal requirement to do so.
Can you work with my child’s school?
Yes. Where appropriate and with the necessary consent, I can liaise with schools and other professionals involved in a child’s life.
This may include attending meetings, sharing relevant therapeutic observations and recommendations, or helping the adults around the child develop a more joined-up understanding of their needs.
Schools & Professionals
Do you work with children with ADHD, autism or additional needs?
Yes. I have extensive experience working with children and young people with a range of additional needs, including ADHD, autism and SEND.
My professional experience includes working across specialist and SEND settings, and I understand the importance of adapting the therapeutic environment and approach around the individual child.
Alongside my professional experience, I also have personal, real-life experience of autism and ADHD within my own family. This has given me an additional understanding of some of the experiences and challenges children and families may face, alongside the professional knowledge and experience I bring to my work.
What if my child doesn't want to come to therapy?
It is common for a child or young person to feel unsure about therapy, particularly if they have not experienced it before.
The first sessions are about getting to know each other, becoming familiar with the space and building a therapeutic relationship. There is no expectation that they immediately need to talk about difficult experiences.
I take time to understand what feels comfortable for the child and adapt the way we work accordingly.
Do you offer support for parents?
Yes. I offer reflective parenting Sessions for parents and carers who would like space to think about what may be happening for their child, understand their emotional needs and consider practical strategies and ways of responding at home.
Reflective parenting sessions can also be considered alongside a child’s therapy where appropriate.
Do you provide reports?
Yes. Where a written report is appropriate, reports are charged at £100 per hour.
The amount of time required will depend on the nature and length of the report and the information that needs to be included.
How do I get started?
The first step is a free initial telephone consultation with me.
You can tell me a little about what has been happening, ask any questions you have and find out more about how I work.
There is no obligation to continue.
